Start by rebooting your computer so that the AUTO folder runs all the serial driver programs. The serial port driver HSMODEM and the SERBUF4K utility should display initialisation messages. Once on the desktop, open the folder containing Wen.Suite and double-click on it.
The first dialog box to be displayed will allow you to register Wen.Suite. On the first line, enter your name or the name of your company if the program is for professional use. You will find the registration number that should be entered on the second line printed, on the label of your original Wen.Suite disk.
If your computer is not equipped with a real time clock, Wen.Suite will ask you to set the date and time. It is essential for Wen.Suite to have the correct time settings: the updating of HTML cache files is based on the date of the last change. Also, Email and News messages must be correctly dated, otherwise some servers might refuse to send the messages. Without a real time clock, you will have to set the time and date every time the computer is switched off.
Next, the Wen.Suite welcome dialog box is displayed. After confirming, both default windows open: the organiser and the Web. The organiser allows quick navigation to any part of Wen.Suite and can be invoked by the [CTRL]+[SPACE] keyboard shortcut or the File menu. The Web window displays the default HTML page, WELCOME.HTM, which describes the latest changes to the program. The default HTML page can be easily changed.
For the moment, go to the Wen.Suite/About Wen.Suite menu and check that your name and serial number appear in the information dialog box. If instead you have the message "*** UNREGISTERED VERSION ***", then your registration has failed and you should try again by re-running Wen.Suite.
In this section we will not cover all of the available options (for this, please read Appendice A), but only those directly used for starting Wen.Suite.
Go to the Options/Display menu. If you have a video board (Mega STE or TT with a Nova or other such board in the VME port, Hades or Milan in all cases), click on the Graphics tab and Video device, select ISA/PCI. Determining if you have a video card is easy: the picture in the Welcome to Wen.Suite splash screen will be garbled or the colours will be wrong. The change of video modes will only be effective when the program is loaded, so confirm with OK, save the options with Options/Save INF, quit and re-run Wen.Suite.
Also in the Options/Display menu, the Background tab allows you to tone down the display of graphics in Web pages. Background images can make the text displayed over them unreadable. Therefore you should deactivate them for monochrome, 16 and 256 colour modes. This option is not available in True-Color because the display quality will be good enough for the background not to interfere with text.
The Options/Fonts menu allows changing the character fonts used for displaying text. General allows changing fonts for Email, News, the viewer and dialog boxes. You can also reduce the font size in the organizer. The next tab, Size, allows you to select the global font size for HTML rendering. STD should be fine in most cases, but you can increase the size if text displayed is too small, or reduce it if it is too large. If you do not have any vector fonts (if neither Speedo GDOS nor NVDI 3 or higher are installed), select the Optimized option so that Wen.Suite does not use font scaling on the Atari system fonts.
The three next tabs, Text, Title and Non-Prop, allow you to select the fonts for HTML rendering. By default, Wen.Suite will search for Speedo fonts DUTCH 801 for text, SWISS 721 for titles and COURIER 10 for non-proportional, if available. If you do not have the bold or italic variants of the fonts used, then you can select +Bold and +Italic to convert the existing fonts. Please note that you have to select a non-proportional font for Non-Prop, the most common Speedo ones being COURIER 10 and MONOSPACE 821. See appendice C to resolve any accent issues.
Confirm with OK and switch to the Options/Message box menu. Enter your Email address as given by your Internet provider. On the next line, User Name, enter your full name with Capital Initials, as this is the common format used on the Net, but do not use any accents. If you are using Wen.Suite as a professional tool, enter the name of your company in Company Name. For the Machine Name, you can enter "Atari", "Falcon", "Hades" or "Milan" or whatever you like, as long as it is only made of alpha-numerical characters (A-Z, a-z and 0-9) and no space. Switch to the Servers tab and in Domain Name enter the portion of your Email adress that comes after the '@' character. Click on OK.
Next, select the Options/Email-News menu and look at the POP Mail and SMTP Mail tabs. In POP Mail Server and SMTP Server, enter the server addresses that were provided to you by your ISP. This can be the same for both of them. Mail Login, also called "mailbox identifier" is usually the first part of your Email address (the part before the '@'). With most providers, the mail login is the same as the connection Login, but it can be different. Mail Password is your mailbox password and may also be the same as your connection password. SMTP Identification is, again, your full Email address.
Click on the News tab. Enter the News Server address, again as given by your ISP. Finally, click on the Misc tab and set your time zone. Click OK and save your preferences by selecting the Options/Save INF menu.
We have yet to configure the connection parameters, which are firstly the serial port and modem, and secondly PPP Link and the TCP/IP software layer.
Let's start with the Options/Modem menu. You have to set the correct serial port and speed. The choice of port is only really possible on a TT, Mega STE or Hades. On other machines the choice is limited to MIDI or Modem/Serial, where you should choose the latter. On TT, Mega ST or Hades machines you have 3 or 4 possibilities so you should select the port to which your modem is attached (this is written on the machine's case)..
Now that you have selected the port, you have to set the connection speed. You must always set the speed after the port because the available speeds are for the which port has been selected. Please note that the optimal communication speed with the modem should be approximately 4 times it's maximum connection speed, so that the MNP5 compression protocole can play its part. This is useful with text pages that make up Web, Email and Newsgroup contents. Be aware that on ST, Mega ST and STE machines, the serial port speed is limited to 19200 unless you perform a hardware modification (quartz component change). The following table shows the various recommended speeds.
Computer |
Serial port speed |
Notes |
ST MegaST STE |
19200 bauds |
Unmodified |
ST MegaST STE |
38400 bauds |
Modified serial port |
Other Ataris |
57600 or 115200 bauds |
Modem 2 or Serial 2 port |
Use of speeds beyond 115200 bauds is not recommended. Transfers will be less
reliable, and Internet applications do not require them. If necessary, you might
want to check that modem messages and commands are compatible with the default
parameters. The initialization string might interfere with some modems. In this
case, try stripping it or even deleting it. Wen.Suite sets all other parameters
automatically, such as 8bits, no parity, 1 stop, RTS/CTS handshake. You should
not be concerned with these.
Confirm with OK and go to the Options/PPP Link menu to finish configuring Wen.Suite.
In Phone Number, you must enter the number of your access point, also called POP (Point of Presence). This number must be given to you by your ISP.
In Login and Password you have to enter the connection login and password as provided by you ISP. For most providers, the login is the same as the first part of your Email address (the part before the '@'). The login and password are case sensitive, so take special care at making sure that what you enter is exactly what has been given to you by the ISP.
We still have to fill in the 2 fields for domain name servers (DNS). These are "dotted quad" numbers such as 194.51.83.1 and 194.51.83.2. If your provider has only given you one DNS address, then copy it into both fields. To enter them, completely erase the previous address (usually 0.0.0.0) by pressing ESC and enter the digits and dots without spaces or unnecessary zeros (194.051.083.001 is not valid). Do not be concerned if there is room left.
You still have to setup the Script option. This is the only part which can cause problems. For most providers, just select Auto or None. Only if PPP Link fails to establish a connection with this setting should you then choose to set a manual script and follow the section about creating a script.
Go to the File/PPP Link menu. The dialer box will be displayed. Click on Connect. The modem should unhook phone line and start dialing. The modem's internal speaker allows you to monitor what is going on. After 10 or 20 seconds, your modem should start negociating the connection with the distant server. The Carrier message will tell you the serial connection speed established with the distant modem, while the Link message will indicate the local serial speed between the computer and your modem. Then, the Reading Script message should be displayed.
